About the Conference

SABE KC 2010 will be held September 23-26, 2010 at the Westin-Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri.  This year's conference is SABE's 10th Annual Self Advocacy Conference.  This year’s conference theme is “Jazz It Up: Celebrating 20 Years of Self Advocates Being Empowered,” which marks the anniversary of the ADA and acknowledges the last twenty years of the self advocacy movement in the United States! For the last decade, this conference has been the largest gathering of self advocates in the United States. The conference is estimated to bring 1,000+ self advocates together to learn, collaborate, problem solve, and celebrate the past two decades of the self advocacy movement.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:

  • Come together to develop a national agenda to move the self advocacy movement forward and find out what is happening in other state and local self advocacy organizations.
  • Learn about self-determination and receive tools to take home to help more people in your state lead more self-determined lives.
  • Learn about strengthening relationships in peoples’ lives and how people with disabilities can be fully supported in an inclusive community.

  • Self Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE) is the self-advocacy organization of the United States. Founded in 1990, SABE has been working hard for the full inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in the community throughout the 50 states and the world for 20 years. About the Hosts

  • People First of Missouri (PFMO) is a statewide organization formed by, run by and which exists for persons with developmental disabilities.   • The Institute for Human Development, located within the University of Missouri Kansas City, is an applied research and training center for human services. It exemplifies the University's goals of academic excellence and a campus without borders by helping people, agencies, and the community reach their fullest potential. As a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), the Institute conducts and collaborates on a wide variety of Applied Research projects to develop, implement, and evaluate new ideas and promising practices that support healthy, inclusive communities.
  • The Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (KUCDD), established in 1969, is a component of the Life Span Institute at the University of Kansas.  As a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities, the core functions of the KUCDD are pre-service training, research, information dissemination, andcommunity services.  Our misson, as established by the KUCDD Consumer Advisory Panel, is, through research, training, technical assistance, and community service activities, to enhance the quality of life, self-determination, and inclusion of Kansans with developmental disabilities and their families.
